Billy Connolly has undergone surgery for prostate cancer and has also been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease it was confirmed.

“Billy Connolly recently underwent minor surgery in America after being diagnosed with the very early stages of prostate cancer. The operation was a total success and Billy is fully recovered”, the spokeswoman for the 70-year-old Scottish actor and comedian said.

The Glasgow born actor, known as the “Big Yin”, has also been diagnosed with the initial stages of Parkinson’s disease, for which he is receiving treatment, but has vowed to continue with his on screen and on stage work.

“Billy has been assured by experts that the findings will in no way inhibit or affect his ability to work, and he will start filming a TV series in the near future, as well as undertaking an extensive theatrical tour of New Zealand in the new year”, his spokeswoman added.

The Scot started work as a welder in Glasgow’s ship yards but quit in the 1960s to start a career as a folk singer, he then went on to try his hand at stand-up comedy.

Friends of the Scottish star voiced their support following the news of his surgery.

Sir Michael Parkinson, one of the Big Yin’s best friends, said “I wish my old friend Billy well. I look forward to seeing Billy back doing what he does best – making us all laugh”

Another famous friend of Connolly’s, Sir Bob Geldof described the Scot as “strong”.

“He’s a great man, a great friend and has helped me out loads in my endeavours. He’s as strong as an ox mentally from everything he’s been through as a kid so I don’t think this will deter him from being that individual that we know.”
