SCOTS think that prime minister David Cameron’s recent visit to Scotland will have a negative impact on Better Together, according to exclusive research carried out by the News Room.

Mr Cameron has made several appeals to Scottish voters to remain in the union when they vote in the independence referendum in September, including several trips north of the border to appeal to voters.

A survey carried out by Fife College students suggested that many think the PM’s latest appeal will backfire and boost support for the Yes campaign.

Stacey Wallace, 16, from Kirkcaldy, said she believed that any English Tories who come here will be unpopular with voters.

“It’s a complete hinder to the Better Together campaign. We didn’t vote Conservative, so being told how to vote by him will put many off.

“Some people might like that he’s showing an interest, but it’s for all the wrong reasons.”

Oscar Arnstein, 18, agrees, saying that many voters already struggle to connect with Westminster politicians.

“Cameron was elected by the middle classes south of the border and accordingly he alienates the vast majority of the Scottish population who struggle to connect with his posh-knob ego. Accordingly he epitomises exactly what the SNP feed off, a dissonance between South English conservatism and the Scottish Socialist ideal.”

Many commentators agree, and have warned that his presence may well have a negative impact on the pro-union campaign. This has led to the prime minister turning down the offer of a televised debate between himself and Scottish first minister Alex Salmond.

He has also been forced to deny claims that he will step down as PM should a yes vote be successful.
